Description

This book delves into the acute toxicity of copper on the freshwater bivalve Lamellidens jenkinsianus obesa, providing valuable insights into its environmental implications. The study evaluates the lethal concentration (LC50) of copper over 24 to 96 hours, examining the behavioral and physiological changes in the species. The findings contribute to our understanding of copper's toxic effects, offering a foundation for future research on metal toxicity in aquatic ecosystems, particularly in the Barak Valley region. This work is crucial for researchers, environmental scientists, and policymakers addressing aquatic pollution and its impact on local species.

Abstract

The acute toxicity of copper (Cu) was assessed in Lamellidens jenkinsianus obesa, a freshwater bivalve, to determine its lethal concentration (LC50) over different time intervals (24, 48, 72, and 96 hours). The study found that copper caused significant mortality and behavioral changes in the species, with LC50 values decreasing over time. Behavioral responses included reduced locomotion and secretion of milky mucus. The results suggest that L. jenkinsianus obesa exhibits resistance to copper toxicity, and the findings have important implications for monitoring metal pollution in freshwater ecosystems, especially in Assam's Barak Valley.
