Surgical Orhodontics

Surgical orthodontics, also called orthognathic surgery, corrects severe skeletal jaw discrepancies that braces alone cannot fix. It is indicated for patients with significant malocclusion due to abnormal jaw size, position, or asymmetry causing functional and aesthetic issues. Treatment involves 3 phases: pre-surgical orthodontics to align teeth, orthognathic surgery by a maxillofacial surgeon to reposition maxilla/mandible, and post-surgical orthodontics for final occlusion. Common procedures include Le Fort I osteotomy for maxilla and bilateral sagittal split osteotomy for mandible. It improves mastication, speech, TMJ function, and facial balance, but requires multidisciplinary planning and longer treatment .
