Description

This book provides a comprehensive study on the participation of farm women in organic and conventional farming across various agro-climatic zones. It explores the work burden, socio-economic status, and Family Quality Index (FQI) of organic farming families compared to conventional ones. The findings highlight the increased labor intensity of organic farming but also its positive impact on the socio-economic well-being of farm women. The book also addresses challenges faced by women in organic farming and suggests strategies for improvement, focusing on sustainable agricultural practices, training, and better market linkages.

Abstract

This study examines the participation of farm women in organic and conventional farming practices and assesses their Family Quality Index (FQI). Based on a sample of 300 women across three agro-climatic zones, the research reveals that organic farming involves higher labor intensity, especially in tasks such as sowing and processing. However, organic farming families exhibit better socio-economic conditions, with a significantly higher FQI. The study identifies challenges like lack of certified seeds, storage issues, and certification difficulties. Recommendations include training in integrated farming, water harvesting, and market linkages to enhance the productivity and well-being of farm women.

The book covers a broad scope, though I wish some areas had been explored in more detail.
